The processed food waste serves as a raw material for the production of biodiesel or is used to generate environmentally friendly energy in the form of electricity and heat from biogas plants.
In Annex V of the MARPOL Convention, ship-generated waste is defined as waste that arises during the normal operation of a ship. This also includes residual waste that accumulates on and in the galleys and mess rooms.
Due to the limited space available on board, waste treatment mainly involves volume reduction processes such as pressing or shredding, and this is precisely where Mercodor shredders come into play.
Another area of application would be biogas plants in which energy crops (e.g. maize and other cereals, reed grass etc.), residues such as harvest residues (e.g. beet leaves), animal excrement (e.g. liquid manure, dung), by-products from food production (e.g. fats, leftovers, potato peelings) or organic waste (e.g. sewage sludge) are shredded. Mercodor shredders are also used here.
